About the same number of Arizonans as last year are going home for Christmas and New Year’s compared to last year, AAA Arizona has found.
According to the travel source, almost 1.4 million Arizonans will travel over the upcoming year-end holidays. Nationwide, AAA projects the number of year-end holiday travelers will top 100 million for the first time on record. This represents a 1.4 percent increase over 2014.
“The year-end travel period is generally the most traveled days of the year,” said Amy Moreno, senior travel manager for AAA Arizona. “While we’re expecting travel among Arizonans to remain flat, we’re still producing a very strong and healthy number of travelers.”
Arizona highlights from AAA’s 2015/16 Year-End Holiday Travel Forecast include:
•Motorists to drive travel numbers. About 60 percent of Arizonans (more than 813,000) will celebrate the holidays with a road trip, an increase of 3.4 percent over 2014.
•Fewer travelers take flight. AAA expects more than 528,000 Arizonans to fly to their holiday destinations. This is a slight decrease (2.5 percent) over 2014.
•Low gas prices fuel holiday budgets. Lower pump prices are filling stockings with a little more cash to spend on travel this year. The current statewide average is $1.99 per gallon, which is a more than 49 cent year-over-year savings. Motorists haven’t experienced December gas prices this low since 2008.
