Improvement projects will require closures or other restrictions along Phoenix-area freeways this weekend (May 20-23). The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends planning ahead and considering alternate routes while the following scheduled restrictions are in place:

  • Southbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed between 90th Street and Chaparral Road in Scottsdale area from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (May 23) for rubberized asphalt paving. Southbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Cactus Road and Shea Boulevard also closed. Consider alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic backups approaching closure. Alternate southbound freeway routes include State Route 51 or Interstate 17. Southbound Loop 101 traffic exiting at 90th Street will detour south on Pima Road and can re-enter Loop 101 at Chaparral or Indian School roads. Allow extra travel time. Southbound Loop 101 on-ramp at Indian Bend Road, southbound off- and on-ramps at McDonald Drive and southbound off-ramp at Chaparral Road will be closed on Friday (May 20) and remain closed as part of full southbound freeway closure that starts Friday night. Drivers on Friday can use ramps at adjacent interchanges, including Via De Ventura.
  • Eastbound Interstate 10 closed at Dysart Road in West Valley from 10 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday (May 21) for installation of overhead message sign and equipment. Eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Litchfield Road also closed.  Eastbound I-10 then closed at Avondale Boulevard (eastbound on-ramp at Dysart Road also closed) from 10 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday (May 22) for overhead message sign and equipment work. Consider alternate routes away from primary detour route to avoid heaviest traffic delays. Eastbound I-10 traffic will detour along the off- and on-ramps at Dysart Road or Avondale Boulevard or drivers can detour to eastbound McDowell Road or Van Buren Street to travel beyond closures. I-10 narrowed to three lanes in both directions (left lanes closed) between 83rd and 91st avenues from 10 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday (May 22) for construction. Please use caution in work zones.
  • Northbound Loop 303 off- and on-ramps at El Mirage Road closed from 5 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday (May 23) for paving. Consider alternate routes, including using northbound Loop 303 ramps at Happy Valley Parkway. Northbound El Mirage Road traffic can detour on Williams Drive and 117th Avenue and access northbound Loop 303 via westbound Happy Valley Parkway.
  • Southbound Interstate 17 closed at times (up to 30 minutes) overnight near Anthem Way from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday (May 21) for overhead message sign work. Southbound I-17 on-ramp at Anthem Way closed. Consider using southbound I-17 on-ramp at Daisy Mountain Drive. Please allow extra travel time and be prepared for slowing and stopped traffic approaching the work zone.

ADOT plans and constructs new freeways, additional lanes and other improvements as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region. The primary funding source for regional freeway improvements is a half-cent sales tax approved by county voters in 2004.
