Pavement resurfacing requires weekend closures for parts of 101, 202 in East Valley

Sections of Loop 101 and Loop 202 in the East Valley will be closed this weekend while crews resurface the freeways with a new layer of smooth rubberized asphalt.

The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends drivers consider alternate routes if at all possible to avoid traffic backups while the following closures are in place:

  • Northbound Loop 101 closed between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Thomas Road from 10 p.m. Friday (April 15) to 5 a.m. Monday (April 18) for rubberized asphalt paving. Both Loop 202 ramps to northbound Loop 101 will be closed. Drivers should consider alternate freeway routes, including westbound US 60 and I-10 to northbound State Route 51 to access northeast Phoenix and north Scottsdale. Northbound Loop 101 traffic will detour to Loop 202, but drivers are likely to encounter long delays during much of the weekend.
  • Southbound Loop 202 closed between University Drive and Elliot Road in east Mesa from 9 p.m. Friday (April 15) to 5 a.m. Monday (April 18) for rubberized asphalt paving. Both US 60 (Superstition Freeway) ramps to southbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) will be closed. Traffic will detour along local roadways, including southbound Ellsworth and Sossaman roads. Consider alternate routes to avoid anticipated heavy traffic on southbound Loop 202 approaching the closure at University Drive.

The Loop 101 paving is part of the $73 million project to widen an 11-mile stretch of Loop 101 south of Shea Boulevard, where new lanes and other improvements are being added to the freeway. The project started in August 2014 and is set for completion by this fall.

A one-inch layer of rubberized asphalt is used on most Phoenix-area freeways to provide a smooth, durable driving surface that helps limit noise from vehicle tires.
