Queen Creek Unified School District will conduct its Kindergarten Countdown for students who will be 5 years old by Aug. 31. The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Queen Creek elementary schools.

“QCUSD is excited to offer an event for families with future kindergarten students,” QCUSD Superintendent Dr. Perry Berry said. “Families will have the opportunity to attend our countdown to kindergarten event to learn more about our schools and the variety of innovative and engaging activities we have to offer.”

Elementary schools in the QCUSD are: Desert Mountain Elementary (grades K–5), 22301 S. Hawes Road; Frances-Brandon Pickett Elementary (grades K-5), 22076 E. Village Loop; Jack Barnes Elementary (grades K-5); 20750 S. 214th St.; and Queen Creek Elementary (grades preschool-5); 23636 S. 204th St., all in Queen Creek; and Gateway Polytechnic Academy (grades preschool-6); 5149 S. Signal Butte in Mesa.

This is an opportunity to visit the school, meet teachers and classmates and learn about the kindergarten educational standards. This informational meeting gives an overview of kindergarten routines, instructional practices and readiness expectations.

Kindergarten teachers will be available to answer questions and share insights to help families prepare for their child’s first year.

You can register your child for kindergarten at this time. You should bring the following items if registering a child:

•Original birth certificate
•Current immunization record
•Proof of residency (one of the following: electric, gas, water, purchase contract or lease agreement)
•Parent/guardian photo ID

If your child will be 5 years of age between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31 and you wish to register them for the 2016-17 school year, he or she must take an early entrance assessment. We are currently accepting applications for early entrance, and there is a fee of $30 to cover the cost of the assessment. You can apply at the district office, which is at 20217 E. Chandler Heights Road in Queen Creek.

Early kindergarten testing is June 6-7. Call Kelly Blackham to reserve a time at 480-987-7488. Students who qualify for early entrance through the assessment may then enroll.

The Queen Creek Unified School District is one of only nine districts in the state to have been graded “A” by the Arizona Department of Education for four consecutive years (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14).
