Students learn valuable marketing lessons thanks to One Purple Cup project

Imagine trading one purple plastic drinking cup for a computer, bicycle or even a flat screen TV? That’s exactly what marketing students at Queen Creek High School did during a recent class project. The purpose of One Purple Cup was to teach students effective sales strategies and methods.

The project started with a Queen Creek stadium cup. For four weeks, students attempted to acquire objects of higher value. The trades and bartering took place via word of mouth on campus, door to door neighborhood sales, on Craigslist, even on Facebook.

Students maintained logs of transactions and milestones reached. The success was incredible.

At the end of the project students had a wide variety of items in their possession including a MacBook, Samsung Galaxy tablet, bicycle, camera, Fitbit, ladies watch, a 32-inch flat screen television, designer handbags and even a 2015 U.S. Open golf ball.

“The most unique offer received for the ‘One Purple Cup’ project was from a man in Michigan. The offer was a Wave Runner and trailer; however, the student had to take a road trip to get it which was not feasible (nor did parents approve). But, still an interesting offer from many states away,” said class teacher Deidre Myers.

The One Purple Cup project is a great example of learning that is fun and engaging. Students learned money isn’t always necessary to acquire goods and services.
If you target the right group of people, make your item desirable and stay organized you can obtain high quality goods and services.
