Six years ago this week the top news stories for the Aug. 3, 2011, Queen Creek Independent, included: Queen Creek Town Council is meeting in closed-door session discussing its position on continuing efforts to annex about 80 acres of land at Combs and Gantzel roads, according to a July 20 executive session agenda.

The plot of land has a Fry’s Marketplace and the Banner Ironwood Medical Center — structures the town and Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce officials say have been planned for annexation for some time because the area has always been within the municipality’s planning area.

One member of council says the effort is long standing, but only initial steps may be taken in the near future to approach Banner officials on the legality of annexing the property.
