Five years ago this week the top news stories for the Aug. 31, 2011, Queen Creek Independent, included:

By this time next year the first of a seven-phase widening project on Hunt Highway within San Tan Valley may be completed, Pinal County officials contend. The $5 million project includes widening of the thoroughfare from Empire Boulevard to Thompson Road including drainage improvements along the road to aid water retention from the Sonoqui Wash, county officials say. While no distinct timeline has been identified for work to be done or a scheduled start date announced two Pinal County officials confirm the money is in hand and the work will commence sometime next year.
