Queen Creek voters will go to the polls Tuesday, Aug. 30, in part to fill three spots on the Queen Creek Town Council for council members whose terms expire in December. If needed, a runoff election will take place during the Nov. 8 general election.

Candidates in the nonpartisan election for town council are: incumbents Craig Barnes, Robin Benning and Jeff Brown; and Todd Broadhead, Jake Hoffman, Matt McWilliams, Stacy Portonova and Natasha Schaeler.

All candidates must be qualified electors of the town and have resided in the town for at least one year prior to the election for which a candidate is running. An exception applies for a person living in an area that has been annexed into the town during the year preceding the election as long as that person has resided in the annexed area at least one year prior to the election, according to the town’s website.

The eight candidates filed the necessary paperwork to run for office by the 5 p.m. June 1 deadline, Town Clerk Jennifer Robinson said in an e-mailed response to questions.

Candidates had to file the following information: a nomination paper, a financial disclosure statement and nomination petitions containing a minimum 93 signatures and maximum 187 signatures, the town clerk said.

Council members serve at-large representing all residents of the town. Council members serve four-year staggered terms and there are no term limits.

The Queen Creek Independent in May asked candidates to send a photo and to answer a short questionnaire for publication and for online. Click on the candidate’s name to read their responses.
