Dr. Denise Birdwell: National School Choice Week celebrated Jan. 25-31

In celebration of National School Choice Week Jan. 25-31, Higley Unified School District would like to thank the thousands of families that choose Higley Schools. Our elementary schools average a 92 percent capture rate from the community, making us the “destination district” for our piece of Gilbert.

We welcome school choice. We know families select our growing Mandarin Immersion program and traditional academy for elementary school students and the flourishing and award-winning robotics programs in our middle schools. Our award-winning high schools provide rigor and relevance in all areas. We have been honored by the college board for our AP classes, received state and national recognition in our video productions, arts, biotechnology and engineering programs. Our schools are all “A” schools that pride themselves in high academic achievement, as well creating a student-focused learning environment that partner with parents. We’ve become the No. 1 large, public school district in Arizona through the support of the community: our parents, our teachers and our students.

One mom recently told us: “I am a mom to two children in the Higley school district. We have been part of Higley for nine years and have seen this district grow and become No. 1 in the state. We chose to put our children in HUSD because we support our neighborhood schools. We feel that Higley has a tradition of excellence and stability and is a competitive choice for our students because it offers comprehensive programs such as: musical options, fine arts, STEM, international languages and state championship and NCAA-accredited sports programs. All of these offerings create many opportunities for all of our community children.”

Another wrote: “We have been in HUSD since the day one of Chaparral Elementary. Every year, we are blessed with great teachers who care and special programs in recreational athletics and the arts. Higley’s music and band programs are truly nourishing my children. We cannot wait for our older child to start at one of our high schools and make use of all the AP classes, dual enrollment, college-prep advisement/coaching, and wonderful non-academic activities as well. Higley schools have proven the fact that with great leadership and teachers, the children in our community can achieve and succeed.”

Dozens of our programs were on display recently at SanTan Village during the Higley Education Expo, where families saw creations of our talented art and dance students, heard the music of our budding elementary musicians and explored the engineering, television production and athletics options at our high schools. Together, these programs “connect, engage and inspire” students, preparing them to be college-and career-ready. We want to graduate the next generation of superstars, ready to go after and capture their dreams and bring new ideas to our growing community. We are excited about the choice Higley families make to join us for their educational journey.
