Ginny Hildebrand: United Food Bank serves 217,000 ‘food-insecure people’

Throughout the spring, our agency-relations team – Jeff Bender and Deb Bowman – have been in “training mode” with all of our community partners, sharing all the detail of what it takes to serve hungry people in a partner’s neighborhood or community. While most of the training sessions were here at United Food Bank, to help everyone participate, some of the sessions have been in our rural area to the north and south.

Last week, I traveled with them and one of our board members to Show Low and Snowflake to meet with and train our partners there. It was a great time, getting to see the end of one distribution up close and personal, and then visiting with many of the partner leaders to learn of their challenges, share resources and figure out how to overcome some of the barriers in their way of being the best at what they do: Feeding people.

During this time, we came to understand more clearly the difficulty many of our agencies grapple with to do the hard work, day in and day out of nourishing their neighbors who consistently struggle to put food on the table. These dedicated and committed folks, almost all volunteers, are truly an inspiration to all of us here at United Food Bank. Our thanks to them for the work they do, that completes the work we do of gathering and distributing the food throughout our 19,608-square-mile service area. We couldn’t do it without them or you.

Our newsletter this month is full of accomplishments. And that’s what it takes to serve more than 217,000 food-insecure people. However, as summer begins to emerge, with rising temps and long hot days, take advantage of the opportunities to donate food and funds to help our efforts. It is one thing you and your friends and neighbors can do to help.
