Queen Creek High swimmers smash school record, qualify for state

Boys team defeats Westwood 114-72 on Oct. 6 , girls win 110-66

The Queen Creek High School boys and girls swim team each won by impressive scores at their last home meet of the season and senior night on Thursday, Oct. 6.

The teams continued their success into Saturday (Oct. 8), swimming in the Chandler High meet and qualifying multiple swimmers to state.

The boys defeated Westwood on Thursday 114-72 and the girls won 110-66.

The high point earners of the meet were Gavin Kratzer, Paige Rosta and Brette Mullenaux, who each scored 12 points for their teams. Jarek Wilson scored second place in the dive competition.

“Kyle Durant stepped up to the block in lane four after a teammate scratched and went an impressive 1:11.80 in the 100 Fly,” said head coach Heather Solomon. “Savannah Mendoza and Taylor Allen had equally impressive 100 Fly’s with times drops of :14 and :05, respectively.  Robert Dominguez and Liz Giroux swam the 500 Free for the first time and lived to tell about it.”

“The JV swimmers concluded breaststroke training and many improved their strokes and their times dramatically,” said Solomon.

On Saturday, the team had a number of great swims including Sophie Zecher’s school-record shattering in the 500 Free with a 5:40.28.

Other notable swims included: James Frasier in the 200 Free (dropped :07), Savannah Mendoza had a quick 28.90 50 Free (a 2 second drop) and Trevor Alford went back-to-back best times in the 100 Fly (1:05.02) and 100 Back (1:09.30) with more than :02 drops in each race.

Equally impressive in the 100 Back, Carson Gardner and Paige Rosta had :02 and :03 drops and Isaac Eller had a :02 drop in the 100 Breast. Jared Fischer finished the night with two great times in the 50 and 100 Free, both state provisional times.

The high point scorer was Sophie Zecher with 37 individual points.

The Dogs have a dual against McClintock on Thursday (Oct. 13) and then will compete in the Charger Invitational next week.

(The meet will take place Oct. 20 in the Nozomi Aquatic Center at McClintock High School, 1830 E. Del Rio Drive in Tempe, according to MaxPreps.com.)

•Gavin Kratzer: 200 Free, 500 Free, 100 Fly

•Brette Mullenaux: 200 Free, 100 Fly, 200 IM

•Paige Rosta: 100 Back

•Ashlyn Wettstein: 100 Breast

•Sophie Zecher: 200 Free, 500 Free 200 Fly, 200 IM
